Expand on the knowledge you learnt on your open water course by completing your PADI Advanced Open Water course. The course takes a minimum of 2 days. In this time you will complete 5 dives, 2 of which are compulsory core dives (deep dive and navigation dive). For the remaining 3, you can choose the dives that interest you the most from a choice of 12. As part of these dives you will be required to read the relevant chapters corresponding to the five dives you are completing and filling in the knowledge review in the Adventures in Diving Manual. Apart from this, the only theory you will be doing is going over the knowledge reviews with your instructor who will then talk to you about any relevant information on this subject particular to diving in the British Isles. The course is very much practical based and most of your learning is water based. Deep Dive 1. Instrument checks. You, your buddy and the instructor will compare the information on your diving computer and analogue gauge in your consol. 2. Timed task. You will be asked to carry out a simple dexterity task whilst being timed on the surface then you will repeat the task under water, again being timed. The times will be noted and reviewed when you have returned to the surface. The aim of this is to highlight how nitrogen narcosis can impair you underwater. 3. Colour absorption and pressure exercise. During this your instructor will demonstrate the effects of pressure and colour absorption by taking a colourful ball under water. You will be shown the effect of pressure on a sealed flexible object and by using a torch see the effect of absorption of light in water Navigation Dive 1. Measuring Distance underwater. You will practice 2 ways of measuring distance underwater. 2. Natural Navigation. You will learn how to navigate by using the bottom topography and sunlight underwater. 3. Square pattern swim. You will put into practice what you have learnt by navigating a square underwater. The choices of dives you can do to complete your advanced open water
