BSAC Experience SCUBA
Discover the fun and adventure
of scuba diving in safe, controlled conditions. This course will give
you the opportunity to experience scuba and to access whether it is a
sport you wish to take more seriously by enrolling on the BSAC Ocean Diver
course. The course is split into two sections:
1. Introduction to scuba
diving, where you will learn the basic information required to dive safely.
2. Practical diving lesson in sheltered water, where you will experience
the thrill and adventure of the underwater world and learn some basic
skills in an enjoyable and safe way.
Equipment and materials are provided for try dives - all you need to
do is bring a towel and swimming costume, and fill in a simple medical
self-declaration/liability release form. Suitable for all ages of 11 years
upwards, parental consent is required if under 18 years of age. On successful
completion, a BSAC International
Experience Scuba certificate and card will be issued.
Please note: this course is a basic introduction
to scuba diving only
- you will not be a qualified diver.
Course Duration: 4 hours (approx.)
BSAC Ocean Diver
Course aim:
To produce a diver who has gained open water diving experience and is
considered ready to take part in dives partnered by a diver of the same,
or higher grade. The BSAC Ocean Diver will not have sufficient knowledge
or experience to take students on open water dives, or to conduct dives
involving decompression stops. BSAC Ocean Divers are also restricted to
a maximum depth of 20 metres. If they wish to dive in excess of this limit
they should do so by gentle progression to greater depths to build experience,
or by joining the BSAC as a member thereby enabling a supervised series
of progressively deeper dives to be organised in order to gain the required
experience.
Course Overview:
The course is divided into four elements:
1. Theory Lessons:
Consisting of an Introduction to Scuba Diving, Adapting to the Underwater
Environment, Open Water Diving, Adventurous Diving and Ocean Diving.
2. Sheltered Water Lessons:
Including: New Experience, Mastering the Basics, Developing Personal Skills,
Developing Buddy Skills and Sheltered Water Assessment.
3. Theory Assessment:
A successful result allows the student to progress to open water diving.
4. Open Water Dives:
Provides the student with an opportunity to put into practice the theory
and practical elements learned in the classroom and sheltered water. In
Ocean Diver training the emphasis is on building a sound foundation of
open water diving skill and experience through a series of five open water
dives led by a BSAC Nationally Qualified Instructor.
Equipment required:
Equipment and materials are provided, including the Welcome to Scuba Training
Pack. All you need to do is bring a towel, swimming costume, two passport
size photographs,
and fill in a simple medical self-declaration/liability release form.
Prerequisites: Minimum age of 12 years (parental
consent required if under 18 years of age).
Course Duration:4/5 days
BSAC Sports Diver
Course aim:
To produce a diver who has gained open water diving experience and is
considered ready to take part in dives partnered by a diver of the same,
or higher grade. The BSAC Sports Diver will not have sufficient knowledge
or experience to take students on open water dives, or to conduct dives
involving decompression stops.
Course Overview:
In Sports Diver training, the emphasis is on building a sound foundation
of open water diving skill and experience through a series of eight structured
practical lessons led by a BSAC Nationally Qualified Instructor and/or
Dive Leader.
The course is divided into four elements:
1. Theory Lessons:
Consisting of an Introduction to Sport Diving, Diver Self-help, Dive Rescue,
Underwater Navigation & Surface Marker Buoys, The Human Life Support
System, Decompression Tables, Dive Computers and Adventurous Diving.
2. Theory Assessment:
A 30 minute written test of knowledge presented during training, taken
towards the end of the course.
3. Open Water Dives/Practical Skill Lessons:
Including: Open Water Diver Rescue, Underwater Navigation, Diving with
an SMB, and dives to 10, 15 and 20 metres.
4. Practical Assessment:
Two assessment dives are undertaken towards the end of the course.
Equipment required:
Equipment and materials are provided, including the Sports Diver Training
Pack. All you need to do is bring a towel, swimming costume and two passport
size photographs.
Prerequisites: BSAC
Ocean Diver/Club Diver or equivalent, full BSAC diving membership, possession
of BSAC certificate of fitness, minimum of 20 open water dives, minimum
age of 14 years (parental consent required if under 18 years of age).
Course Duration:4/5 days
BSAC Dive Leader
Course aim:
To produce an active, experienced and responsible diver, competent in
dive leadership and rescue skills, who may lead others on open water dives.
The Dive Leader is also considered to be sufficiently experienced to enter
for the BSAC Club Instructor examination.
Course Overview:
The emphasis is to present both theory knowledge and practical skills
of dive leadership and rescue management. Theory lessons build on Sport
Diver knowledge, to bring it up to a level commensurate with a Dive Leaders
responsibilities. Students will be expected to study not only the Dive
Leader Student Workbook, but also the full range of BSAC Diving Manuals
The course is divided into four elements:
1. Theory Lessons:
Consisting of Dive Leadership, Diver Rescue, Symptoms and Treatment of
Diving Related Injuries, Rescue Management, Decompression Tables and Air
Requirements, Adventurous Diving and Charts, Tides and Weather.
2. Theory Assessment:
A 60 minute written test is taken towards the end of the course. About
50% of the test assesses general diving knowledge covered up to this point
in training; the balance is a test of Dive Leader theory lesson topics.
3. Open Water Dives/Practical Skill Lessons:
Including: Dive Leadership demonstrations and Rescue Management scenarios.
4. Practical Assessment:
Four assessment dives (Two Dive Leadership, and two Rescue skills) are
undertaken towards the end of the course.
Equipment required:
Equipment and materials are provided, including the Dive Leader Training
Pack. All you need to bring is diving equipment and your blue BSAC qualification
record book.
Prerequisites: BSAC
Sports Diver or equivalent, full BSAC diving membership, possession of
BSAC certificate of fitness, minimum of 20 open water dives since qualifying
as Sports Diver, minimum age of 14 years (parental consent required if
under 18 years of age).
